Clarence Sawyer's son Jeff writes:
Hi Laurie!
I am looking for someone who may have known my Dad.
Here is the info!
Clarence Sawyer Jr, Army # 35 542 405, T/4, MD, Hq Co Med Det 327 Engr
Combat Bn.
Born Bellvue, Ohio. Resided in Clyde, Ohio at time of induction: 1/16/43
Camp Perry, Ohio (Port Clinton)
Discharged at Camp Atterbury, Ind. 3/24/46.
Attended medics schools at Nichols General Hospital, X-mas 43 (have
X-mas menu) Louisville, Ky
and Med Tech Sch, Dawson General Hospital, Atlanta, Ga. both in 43 and
44.
At this time was T/5 Med. Det. 3595th Service unit.
Was in ETO 1/3/45 - 3/9/46. Was credited with being in the Rhineland
Campaign, got a EAME Theater ribbon with a 1 Bronze (service) Star.
Probably something the 327 or 102 got!
Worked? on a hospital ship for short time, the #49 Naushon.
Entry to ETO camp at Boulogne, France.
I know by pictures he was also in Manur Belgium, Lanselshut Germany
picture of dad and buddies, Nurnburg, Germany and Lenk, Berne and Lake
Geneva Switzerland at least.
Had a Good friend from Bellvue, Ohio went in with him and then split up
in ETO/ Warren Ritter.
In the 102 news letter of July/Sept of 2005 there was a letter from a
Bernard O. Kline who said he was a Staff Sgt. 327 Med Det w/ 327 Eng.
Com. Bn. Said his address was on page 322 of 102 book.
I have maybe 75 pictures, some with other guys, mostly of my Dad and
places. Photo album is a 3rd Army Bayern Germany crest? Dk Brown cover
and back. I have some pictures that I can mail you to post.
Dad died March 7, 2001 in Fremont, Ohio from M.S.
Dad did have some 327th Eng Bn. pins, you know the 327 over the Castle.
I would really like to get 1 or a pair for my frame of stuff I am making
of Dad. He through his stuff away about 10 years before he died and
NEVER said any thing to me! Oh well!!
I am an associate member of the 102nd for 3-4 years and attended the
Reunion here in Columbus 3 years ago, so far no luck other the one
letter I mentioned. Mrs. E. said she didn't have any info on him or the
letter and envelope, so strike 2!
So I am hoping this may strike a cord with some one. If he was in the HQ
Det. somebody from the "office" ought to know him.
I want to clarify one thing, Dad was in a Med Det "ASSIGNED" to the
327th Com Eng Bn HQ (based on his discharge papers) he was not in the
327th Medical Co. His pictures show shoulder patches of Army Service
Forces and ETO , none with the 102nd. He is not listed in the roster of
the Alan Mick history book of the 102nd Div, I have the "full" copy
version.
So that is how I have him in the 102nd because the 327th Com Eng Bn was
part of the the 102nd. The only things I remember for sure that he kept
were the 327/castle (Eng) lapel pins, medic pins, ruptured duck and
maybe an Army Services Forces patch , a M.U.C. patch and service bars
and some coins. I don't think there was a 102nd patch but it seems so
real in my memory, so maybe. This a bit long winded and repeating but
maybe this will help.
